Electrical Licensing, Education & Exam Prep

Ohio requires an Electrical Contractor license prior to bidding on or contracting electrical work. Applicants may choose to renew the license annually or every 3 years. What are the requirements to getting a license?

Experience

• Proof of last five years as a Tradesperson, working under a licensed Contractor, performing permittable work. OR currently be a registered engineer in this state with three (3) years of business experience in the construction industry in the electrical trade.
• Copy of 1 permit for each of the last 5 years the licensed contractor (your employer) obtained, and that the applicant worked under.

Other Requirements

• Pass Electrical and Business and Law exams
• Proof of Insurance ($500,000 liability minimum)
• Once approved by the Board, complete a State and Federal Background Check prior to sitting for the examination.

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Ohio Board of State Examiners of Electricians at 614-644-3493 or visit ohio.gov.

Ohio requires each licensee to complete Continuing education prior to each renewal. Ohio has reciprocity agreements with Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Washington and Oregon.

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Once approved, the state will contact you with an exam bulletin.

After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through the OCILB to obtain your Ohio Electrician License. Licensees must provide proof of insurance at this time. How do I pass the exam?

The Ohio Electrician exam is open book. This reference is permitted to be tabbed and highlighted! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
